The film is suspenseful and action-packed, Ryan Gosling is a dreamboat, but the soundtrack to Drive is what caught my attention when this film rolled out in 2011. It brought me back to 2008 when I bought my first DJ equipment and discovered this obscure collective called Valerie out of France. They had a unique sound that was smoother, more minimal, and (to me) more sophisticated than the “banger” maximalist stuff coming out of Europe that was at it’s peak at the time. The collective included groups such as Russ Chimes, College, Anoraak, Minitel Rose, Maethelvin, and the Outrunners and their music was beautiful retro italo-inspired synth pop. Now Nightdrive is coming full-circle and bringing a trifecta of acts made popular by the film but hold a special place in the timeline my electronic music education.
