Pompeya
80s inspired trio Daniil Brod (Guitar & Voice), Nairi Simonian (Drums) and Denis Agafonov (Bass) are Pompeya. Hailing from frigid Moscow, Russia the indie band released their first album Tropical in 2011, ironic? Not necessarily. The album’s tracks exude delicate lo-fi beats with warm vocals that instantly captivate the listener. They describe their music as “melodramatic pop” and the band’s name doesn’t come from the ancient Roman city, rather it is named after a girl. The talented Russians have also released their Rare EP in 2008 and Cheenese in 2010.

Painted Palms
Here’s another psychedelic/chillwave/tropical revival project to sink your teeth into. San Francisco’s Painted Palms released their free Canopy EP last month so hopefully there’s more to come in the near future. I definitely appreciate the diversity among the tracks and there’s only two songs that use ocean/seagull/nature sound effects… bonus! Great White is a more punchy beat with breathy Neon Indian-sounding vocal compression. All of Us is more of an upbeat clap-along with echoey overlapping vocals. Both give us a taste of what Painted Palms is capable of.

All Hail Lord Huron
God I love this stuff. Somewhere between Animal Collective and a piña colada lies Lord Huron. The LA based project is the brainchild of Benji Schneider. Yes, it’s another “beachy” sounding band that sounds like a luau on acid… or in an underground cavern… or both, but I’m a sucker for tropical psychedelics. He made waves with his first EP, Into The Sun, released back in June. His new track Mighty is an upbeat jam in the vein of El Guicho‘s Antillas that makes you want to dance hysterically around a campfire in a grass skirt. It’s set to be released on his new EP by the same name on November 2nd.

El Guincho
[vimeo=http://vimeo.com/15247292]
Directed by Nicolás Méndez
I know I know, I’m a bit late with this one but non the less this needed to grace the “pages” of this blog. The video for El Guinchos‘ single “Bombay” is amazing! Is it me or is this video a bit nostalgic, reminds me of “bad” latinoesque or maybe even cultish movies I caught when I was a kid (women, machine guns, yeah). Love love love it! Also enjoy a few tracks by this Barcelona native sure to bring joy to these gloomy & miserable last couple of days.
