Dude Skywalker – “Feel Good” EP

Nightdrive Miami and Fordistas XII have been silently working on this very exciting project for the past couple months and now is the time to officially divulge what we’ve been up to.

One of the best parts about being in South Florida is the tremendous cultural momentum we’re experiencing, not only in the visual and performing arts, but in music as well. So naturally when new and innovative producers and musicians come along with strong Miami roots, we feel obligated to showcase Miami’s emerging talent. With that said, it’s our pleasure to introduce to you Dude Skywalker, three Miami locals and best friends with a passion for dance music- specifically disco and house. We asked the ‘Dudes’ to give us a new and exclusive track, and Feel Good appeared in our inboxes shortly thereafter. We then asked five other locals to remix the single, providing us a broad sampling of the dance music scene bubbling up from the underground here in South Florida. You can download all six tracks exclusively at Fordistas.com for free (see link after track players). … MORE

French Express

As you may or may not know, our lovely Laura (of Miami), Mr. PatrickWalsh and Nicolette Neves have been busy bees this past week, offering up their disk jockeying skills in homage to the annual winter Bacchanalia known as Art Basel. Nightdrive and our allies set up base camp over at the Wynwood Walls this week, which according to inside sources was pretty rad with killer DJ sets from the Nightdrive team and even break dance battle during Mr. Brown’s set. But, come on, did you really think we’d take the weekend off, cut and run before reaching the sensuous summit that is Mt. Basel? Hell no, there is more! … MORE

Omar-S

Strange to think you gotta go all the way to europe to discover techno and its deep American roots but, alas, that seems to be my reality day to day. The more electronic music I discover, the more I realize that many of my favorite DJs and producers all come from Detroit, a city whose musical history and cultural significance cannot be overstated. When you look upon the ever expanding universe of producers and Djs who inundate our ears on a regular basis, Omar-S AKA Alex Omar Smith is somewhat of an enigma in the modern era. A born and bred Detroiter, Smith’s productions are channeled through analogue alchemy and heavy doses of acid to find their place comfortably within the amorphous, ying and yang duality that is house and techno. Smith was a low-key producer who by day certified car parts for Ford with a colorful array of markers. At night, those very same markers were used to hand label limited vinyl-only releases on his very own FXHE Records (for reasonable prices I might add). He deviated from his DIY MO in 2009 and rose to larger acclaim with a release on Theo Parrish’s Sound Signature called Blown Valvetrane, later being chosen by London’s Fabric club for their 45th mix. … MORE

Matthew Dear

The one and only Matthew Dear has gone ahead and released yet another amazing album, Beams, an amalgam of extraterrestrial pop that highlights his seamless transition from tech-house shaman to scion of modern music in the image of Bowie or Byrne. You’re probably not going to be hearing his tracks on the radio anytime soon; I mean pop in the classical sense, like when radio music happened to be accessible, catchy and fun to dance to. Dear’s label Ghostly International has had nothing short of an amazing run these past few years with releases from the likes of Com Truise, Gold Panda, School of Seven Bells, Tycho and Dear himself, earning it the reputation of being one of the most premiere independent record labels in the world. … MORE

Solomun

Solomun first caught my attention with his rendition of Michael McDonald’s I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near). I realize this isn’t the most untouched track in the world of sampling and edits, but his version seemed to be particularly elegant. This Bosnian-born producer has contributed significantly to the European house scene ranging in style from disco to tech house. Most recently he’s released a killer remix of Kraak & Smaak’s Let’s Go Back featuring Romanthony, a catchy disco single Kackvogel, and another deep track Around with a slew of different versions.

Bicep Presents Throne Of Blood

So the boys over at Bicep have released a retrospective mix of Brooklyn-based label Throne of Blood with some killer dance tracks from their catalog. These are some dark and hard electro-house cuts great for the late-night dance floor trance including Bicep’s own Darwin. I’ve selected a few of my favorites for you to sample but give the rest of the album a listen HERE. … MORE
