London-based producer SBTRKT (pronounced “subtract”) made a good move by using his tribal-meets-Five Deadly Venoms styled mask in photos and live shows. Like the mask, his music doesn’t allow the man to fall under any labels as his production ranges from what you could call funky to garage and dubby to ambient.
With the help of soulful vocalist Sampha, SBTRKT has definitely been able to create his own sound that surprisingly caught the ear of Drake who made a remix to the heavy Wildfire, that also features Little Dragon’s Yukimi Nagano. SBTRKT’s self-titled debut LP which came out this month runs from start to finish, but it’s easy to get stuck on rewind with cuts like Ready Set Loop and the bouncy Pharaohs becoming part of my night time soundtrack riding around downtown.
For people unfamiliar with the man in the mask, who has also done remixes for M.I.A and Mark Ronson, start off by checking out the Step in Shadows EP and some of the tracks below. Definitely some new and exciting sounds coming out of the UK!
