Last time Mayer Hawthorne came to South Florida, he and accompanying band played a live show at the Culture Room in Fort Lauderdale. Time before, the Chocolate Sundays folks were the first to bring him down for a DJ set at Purdy Lounge. One week from this Tuesday he’ll be doing both, first at The Fillmore opening for Chromeo and then on the turntables across the bridge at Bardot.
Since his last trip south, Mayer became (I believe) the first artist on the Stones Throw label to be signed to a major on Universal Republic. He followed up on his dope debut, A Strange Arrangement, with some decent covers on the Impressions EP and of late the Mayer Mondays series where a new MP3 is put up for download at the start of the week off his website.
With his new record How Do You Do coming out next month, it’ll be interesting to see if he can build on the sounds of his first album and not get stuck in the blue-eyed soul zone. Hold it down Mayer!
