BPitch does it again. We highly recommend Safety Scissors’ new LP In A Manner Of Sleeping for your personal music rotation. Lots of great new albums have been released in the last few weeks so don’t let this one slip through the cracks

Bio:

In the early stages of Matthew Patterson Curry’s musical adventures he was surrounded by the likes of Kit Clayton, Sutekh, Twerk, Kid 606, and Matmos, the San Francisco experimental electronic scene in the early naughts, who provided musical support and inspiration for his first forays into production under his Safety Scissors moniker. In May of 2000 at the very first Mutek Festival, he debuted his singing and electronic music in a live context. The dub-tinged techno pop was culled into the Plug Research album Parts Water which received wads of international praise, hailed as a pioneering exploration of fusing songs with experimental techno.

Subsequent worldwide touring and invitations to well respected festivals soon followed, leading him to his obligatory Berlin stint. With Tainted Lunch, his second full length album which was released on Pole’s ~scape label, he strayed further from his initial techno roots, defining his own brand of “dork pop”. His non-singer singing was more present and the structures echoed radio friendly tunes enlisting musical help from friends Kevin Blechdom, Francoise Cactus (Stereo Total), and Erlend Øye. He also has lent his talents for numerous remixes of artists in all shapes in sizes (including Matmos, Sketch Show featuring two members of Yellow Magic Orchestra, and indie bands like Grizzly Bear and Architecture In Helskinki).

During all this he also founded his Proptronix label, releasing acclaimed acts like My Robot Friend and the Pigeon Funk project. Returning to San Francisco eventually he became immersed in the world of audio post production, while he still hung out with his synthesizers at night.

With thirst for growth he relocated to New York in 2010, and between his audio work for artists, composing for ads, DJ gigs and exhausting socializing has completed a third album, which embodies both a more cultivated pop sensibility but also harkens back to his mellow and moody early material. After far too long, Safety Scissors is ready to return to music in 2013 with vigor and sincerity. In A Matter Sleeping encapsulates an extended period of time that Safety Scissors was dormant in the scope of musical press and releases. Besides the standard love and identity fare it covers themes of writer’s block, sloth, perseverance, happenstance, infinity, and relativity.

Back in March, we had the pleasure of booking the boys of PBR Streetgang for an amazing shindig at the SoHo Beach House and we’ve since kept in touch. Tonight they’re back in town to play at the newly re-opened Electric Pickle. Here’s a little chat we had. Check out their US Tour schedule below along with their latest Autobrennt mix.

The first track of yours that caught my attention was your remix of Odyssey’s classic ‘Inside Out,’ though recently it’s been your deeper house tracks that have been very well received. Tell us about your influences and what direction you see yourselves going in the future.
Thank you! Our influences are pretty broad.. Tom was a big fan of bands like The Cure and Neds Atomic Dustbin and I was into everyone from James Taylor to Bjork to Prince and Stevie Wonder… so we draw from a large pool when in comes to inspiration. Though I guess a lot of the basis of all our tracks are rooted in Disco. In future I think it will just be an evolution of that, trying to tread and blur the lines of house, disco & techno; doing what excites us basically!

The name PBR Streetgang is a reference to Apocalypse Now. Out of curiosity, what was the scenario that brought about this name?
It was after a very long weekend. We were sat with our friend John St. John (cool name, huh?!) watching the film .. and right at the end when the radio is blurting out the called sign he blurted out “that’s what you should be called!” At the time we’d already been playing together for a while without any title and it just seemed to fit us really well!

Can you share with us one stand-out memory from your recent Miami Music Week experience?
There was quiet a few! But the Sunday we played with you guys at the Soho Beach House was pretty blissful, great music poolside is always a winner.

We always like to hear what producers are listening to. Are there any new (or older) kids on the block that have your attention?
Oh there are loads! Off the top of our heads Lars Vegas, who is half of Detroit Swindle; we’ve been playing and digging a lot. Maxxi Soundsystem has been a staple in our boxes for ages, consistently on form. Soft Rocks, Crazy P, Terrance Pearce … The Syclops (Maurice Fulton) album is F*K!n brilliant! But honestly we don’t really listen to a lot of house music or dance music in general when we’re at home- tends to be more varied ..things like Hatchback, Nick Drake, Sinkane, Emiliana Torrini, Alt J, Oneohtrix Point Never …. loads of different stuff.

As a DJ duo, are there any differences in your style and taste? How does this play out during your sets?
Our DJ taste is pretty similar which is one of the things that brought us together in the first place. DJing together, you just get a different kind of energy from us than if we’re playing separately. That said though, as DJ duos go I think ours sounds more like one coherent DJ playing than most others, simply because we’ve been playing together so long and know each other so well.

Remaining US Tour Dates:
5/17 Electric Pickle, Miami
5/18 Boys & Girls, San Diego
5/19 Culprit Session Rooftop Bar, The Standard, LA

More excellent output from this infamous studio that Prins Thomas, Todd Terje, Lindstom, and the rest reportedly share. This time it’s Andre Bratten‘s turn to bask in his own Scandinavian brilliance. His new album “Be A Man You Ant” is a journey into another dimension of lush synthy disco. The sound is, of course, characteristic of the Norwegian, and specifically the Full Pupp label: layers of tingling synths subtly placed over each other with rubbery bass lines masterfully composed for patient ears. The album is nothing short of beautiful and one I expect to be listening to for the foreseeable future.

Bio:

She said disco, young french artist from Orléans, produce his unique disco-house sound, sensual and aerial, for some years now. His music is a taste of distilled love, an introduction to trip, to enjoy life.

After many remixes, he finally decided to put out some originals tunes under cool labels such as Shiny Disco Club or Orlinzoo music (which whom he released his debut EP), and he became a safe bet of this new rising french touch scene.

His music received approbation from the biggests like Breakbot, Van She or Anoraak, which help him to share gigs whith some great names like Yuksek, Surkin, Brodinski, Kavinsky, Mr Flash, and many more! But it’s just the beginning, SSD is working on his second EP right now, summer 2013 is going to be hot…
_________________________________________________________________

San Francisco producer Derrick Boyd (previously known as Dead Seal) has joined forces with his wife, Zoe Presnick, to conceive Tone of Arc. The duo has recently released their first album titled ‘The Time Was Right’ of No.19 Music which is a happy marriage of a range of genres, instrumentation and lyricism. Derrick and Zoe demonstrate their musical versatility and not to mention a romantic chemistry throughout the album that can’t be ignored.
Tone of Arc will be making a stop in Miami after ending a long tour through Europe and gracing us with a live performance at The Electric Pickle this Saturday May 11th. In the meantime get to know them a little better with this short, but sweet interview and savor some tracks off their new release.

Let’s start from the beginning, how did you two (Zoe & Derrick) meet and start making music together?
We met on a really hot winter day in San Francisco at Delores Park. I knew I was going to meet a woman that day that I would court with and call my queen, jokes. But really I knew I was going to meet a woman. I waited until someone would say my name in the crowd of people playing hooky from work due to the awesome weather. Michael Tello of Pillowtalk was dragging a gaggle of party aftermath up the hill and in the back was my wife to be. I was on fire and she told me I didn’t have a chance. Soon after that we were making music together calling ourselves “The Machine Forest”.

What led to the name change to Tone of Arc and how would you compare it to your most recent musical project Dead Seal?
Well I have Zoe singing now and I’ve taken a vow to make music that is positively charged with good vibes and words of fun, love, and being warriors in a polluted revolution. Before I used to make some music that wasn’t so thoughtful per my adolescence thinking nobody was listening, so I just did what ever came out. My music was frustrated I guess. I’ve got the secret handshake now so things are much more relaxed but focused.

What role do each of you play in the band? Does it overlap?
I’m a monster, Frankenstein. Zoe is Frankenstein’s Bride. Obviously the performance shows our love and all that mushy stuff. I produce and play all the instruments, which will be changing very soon for live acts (secret instruments). Zoe is my badass vocalist that balances my work and takes the masculinity down a lot making it way easier for people to enjoy our music and show as a whole.

You guys have a lot of interesting lyrics that vary throughout the album. What’s inspired these lyrics?
Like I said before positivity, love, Fun, partying, celebration of life, and being warriors to fight the cause of our own toxic habits like oil, politics, religion, drugs, you know the revolutionary shit we will face whether we want to or not. Keeping it light and mindful of sensitivity to each person’s connection with each of those and or all at once.

What do you aim to achieve with the new musical endeavor?
RULE THE WORLD! Naaaa, I just want people to be happy without making the planet look like shit and sing about it.

Did you incorporate anything out of the ordinary while recording ‘The Time Was Right’ to create your unique sound?
I bought a new shaker. That’s how I got inspired for that particular song. The rest just happened. Like all my music I have no idea where it comes from “via from above”. That was a big song that inspired my vow to be positive. I saw people reacting to my music differently after making it.

We’re excited to have you in Miami this week! What can we expect from the show at the Electric Pickle on Saturday May 11?
Bass, guitar, new songs, album release songs, tech house songs, Zoe and I singing our brains out to you. Anything else is just a bonus and there will be bonuses all around.

What is next for Tone of Arc?
Another album of course. Hopefully one that will blow this one away and with a full band. If we can’t get musicians to do the extra stuff we’ll just have to grow more arms. You know start proving our extraterrestrial powers with some kind of freak show.

Toulouse’s Thierry Moreira, Nicolas Sentenac, Henning Specht aka Hypnolove are releasing a new album titled “Ghost Carnival” (click to purchase) on May 13th. I’m particularly interested in this one as one of my fav disco personalities Mickey Moonlight (Ed Banger) produced the whole thing. “Come to My Empire” is the first single off the LP, it includes an amazing remix by Moonlight himself as well as mixes by Bufi & La Royale, Arpanet, and Turzi.

Biography

Hypnolove are a cult band from Toulouse, in the Southwest France.

Their first album “With spring just round the corner, Record Makers – the label that brought you Sebastien Tellier and Kavinsky (amongst others) – proudly present the sophomore album from Hypnolove, the Toulouse-based trio that have just created the soundtrack to this year’s sunshine. Welcome to the Ghost Carnival…

Featuring the musical talent of Thierry Moreira (vocals/keys), Henning Specht (vocals/chords/drums) and Nicolas Sentenac (guitar/bass), Hypnolove is a group formed between friends that share a common dream, and above all, a passion for discovering and creating music that defies easy categorization. In the purest sense, ‘Ghost Carnival’ delivers a delightful moment of modern pop, although delve deeper and their more obscure influences shine bright – something that the producer, Ed Banger’s UK ambassador Mickey Moonlight (aka Midnight Mike), should also take great credit for.

Nicolas explains, “We needed to find a guideline for this album and although disco and pop built the frame that we worked from, our listening is much wider than that. Artists such as the Walker Brothers, Lucio Battisti, Kid Creole & The Coconuts, Prince, Strafe, ZZ Top, Talking Heads… the list goes on, all of them deserve a salute!” Thierry continues, “We are always looking for new music to listen to and we are all LP lovers, so it was very important for us to make a cohesive album that worked from back to front. Working with Mike was fantastic, he knew all our reference points and was able to change our sound for the better without betraying the spirit of our songs”

There’s no doubt that the combination of Hypnolove’s song-writing with Mike’s production style has elevated the band’s sound and there’s a clear progression in ideas and song structures from their 2006 debut ‘Eurolove’. That album featured the cult hit ‘Mademoiselle’ and, like ‘Ghost Carnival’, was the embodiment of several years of work and that can only be put down to the group performing for pleasure before anything else. Like when they were teenagers, injected with electro-pop, New Order and the Pet Shop Boys, or years later, uncovering obscure bands and stranger more-cryptic oddities, their sound and musical connection is a natural evolution of experience and knowledge.

Lasting just over 30mins, ‘Ghost Carnival’ is as short as it is sweet, but it makes sure that not a moment is spared, with the warm feeling of a summer’s day shining down from the outset. The already released ‘Holiday Reverie’ follows the French-horned, Arthur Russell inspired intro ‘Simple Classic Beautiful’ that provides just enough skip to start your step. The glistening electro-pop of ‘Midnight Cruising’ and band-favourite ‘Come To My Empire’ fall neatly either side of ‘Winter In The Sun’ that features the brilliant vocal talent of British singer Findlay Brown. Two more friends then join the party, with Puro Instinct leader Piper Kaplan and the 9 years-old Freya Parry providing the female touch on both ‘Beyond Paradise’ and ‘Ghost Carnival’ to brilliant effect. There’s one last blast of Italo strings with the dance floor driven ‘Sleepwalker’, before ‘Goodnight Kiss’ provides the perfect, and memorable, goodbye the album so deserves.

It will have you clicking repeat, over and over. As Thierry Moreira invites us all to, “close your eyes and come to my empire”

Guess what Electroclashers?! Adult. is releasing a new album on May 14th! According to the label (Ghostly) they’ve been really busy with home renovations and film stuff for the last 6 years, but now that they’ve completed a 17 month gut job on a 3,000 sqft historical home and some music video collaborations they’re back in the music circuit.

Info:

“Don’t call it a comeback, because ADULT. haven’t been away. It’s been a while since the world heard any recordings from Detroit electropunk pioneers Adam Lee Miller and Nicola Kuperus, it’s true, but that’s because the restlessly creative duo have been busy with other projects: a film trilogy, a soundtrack and an epic home renovation.

“At the end of 2007,” explains Miller, “music was everything, and that didn’t satisfy our multi-disciplinary nature.” It’s easy to see why Miller and Kuperus decided to explore other aspects of their art, because their work has always pushed boundaries boundaries between genres, boundaries between disciplines, and boundaries between media. They’ve been married for 14 years, and artistic collaborators for longer than that. As well as music, their work encompasses photography, painting, a record label and, most notably of late, film…..

When Miller and Kuperus re-entered the studio in 2012, there was no intention of making another album — they planned to record a 12″ containing two new songs they’d written in 2012 for their return to live performance at the Detroit Museum of Contemporary Art. But it turned out that the time away from music had recharged ADULT.’s batteries, and then some. “We were apparently a dam that was ready to break,” says Kuperus. “We were writing frantically, as if in a frenzy.”

The result is a record that sounds both focused and coherent, flowing with a conceptual ease. “[The album] flowed efficiently and agreeably for us,” says Miller. “We have never worked better together. We believe this is because we exorcised all of our demons through our past records, we have no baggage, we started anew. We left behind the self-conscious adolescents.” And indeed, ADULT. have never sounded so self-assured, so poised, and so vital.”

We hope you’ve already found out about Midnight Magic playing at Scaramouche tomorrow night (Saturday May 4th), if you haven’t – it’s true. Scaramouche is not a reference to the Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” it’s a tribute to the disco hay days in Miami. In the late 70s and early 80s, the disco craze and emergence of contemporary club culture manifested itself in the Omni Hotel just north of Downtown Miami. The name of the party was Scaramouche, hosted by local legend Bo Crane and commandeered by resident DJ, Joe Lenders. This members only affair hosted some of the biggest names in the disco scene and set the pace for Miami nightlife as a clubland mecca.

With a firm grasp on the roots of dance music and its legacy, along with a keen sense for emerging talent, Nightdrive Miami is bringing back the spirit of the discotheque… And Midnight Magic (one of our favorite disco outfits) is headlining the night. Dude Skywalker will also be performing their live debut alongside DJS Stravinsky, Ess & Emm, Laura of Miami, and Patrick Walsh. Check out our interview with the NY boogie band below and DO NOT MISS THIS SHOW!

INTERVIEW:

ND: Tell us a little about the band’s history. How did you come together to write and play disco music?

MM: Tiffany, Morgan, and I all met in Los Angeles at the millenium (Tiff’s from there, originally, and Morgan, hailing from Las Vegas, and I, a native New Yorker, met while briefly attending USC). Morgan and I had a band and Tiffany and Morgan recorded music together and when we all ended up in New York years later, it seemed like a good idea for all of us to collaborate together (something we never got a chance to do when we were all living in LA). The timing couldn’t have been better as Morgan had also started playing with new friends he made at the New School–that’s how Carter Yasutake and Max Goldman got involved; the five of us comprised earliest incarnation of Midnight Magic. We bonded over a love of psych, horror, funk, jazz, soul, house, disco, and music from all eras and places and when we put them in a thought-blender–Midnight Magic came poured out. – W. Andrew Raposo

ND: Your live show is always a lot of fun with high energy. When you think back, is there one show that stands out the most while on tour or in New York?

MM: Every show has been quite an amazing experience for me personally, but one that stands out is most recently, when we played in Chamonix. We played atop a picturesque snowy mountain at a chalet that houses a restaurant. Mont Blanc staring across the view at you! It was insane! It felt like we were a band playing in the background of an Indiana Jones film scene! – Tiffany Roth

ND: Dance music is getting a lot of attention these days with the explosion of the “EDM” movement. Where do you see the disco scene going?

MM: Without trying to sound terribly clever, can’t we all agree dance music has always received a lot of attention? Isn’t most music (particularly popular music) dance music? The trend has ebbed and flowed in terms of awareness and marketability but even during the brooding rock era of the 90′s, dance music culture (as most people package it) was turning out lots of kids in warehouses and other appropriated spaces. I was not among them, I’ll confess–I was a snobby punk rocker who was too intimidated by girls to go to raves. But my love of punk and hip hop lead me to funk and electronic music which lead me to house and techno which got me to the club (and now I can’t ever seem to leave–and I rarely want to). Dance music culture has always empowered people to “get free” and, more to the point, “get laid” and that’s pretty powerful stuff. I don’t know how live bands doing funk and soul factor in to EDM but it ultimately doesn’t matter–we shall continue to make the music we make whether or not it’s considered to be a part of some movement and so long as there’s an audience that digs on what we do. I can’t wait for the next “three letter word” or catchy name people will apply to us a few years from now–”power klezmer,” perhaps? Can I trademark that now? – W. Andrew Raposo

ND: What’s coming up for Midnight Magic? Anything in the works?

MM: Aside from dates in the U.S. and Europe throughout the Spring and Summer, we will finally be releasing our debut album on vinyl in the U.S. and fully, and completely, in Europe (with the help of the label that introduced us to the world, Permanent Vacation) later in the Summer. Oh, yeah, and we’re gonna start working on LP2 soon as well… – W. Andrew Raposo

Nightdrive Miami and Fordistas XII have been silently working on this very exciting project for the past couple months and now is the time to officially divulge what we’ve been up to.

One of the best parts about being in South Florida is the tremendous cultural momentum we’re experiencing, not only in the visual and performing arts, but in music as well. So naturally when new and innovative producers and musicians come along with strong Miami roots, we feel obligated to showcase Miami’s emerging talent. With that said, it’s our pleasure to introduce to you Dude Skywalker, three Miami locals and best friends with a passion for dance music- specifically disco and house. We asked the ‘Dudes’ to give us a new and exclusive track, and Feel Good appeared in our inboxes shortly thereafter. We then asked five other locals to remix the single, providing us a broad sampling of the dance music scene bubbling up from the underground here in South Florida. You can download all six tracks exclusively at Fordistas.com for free (see link after track players).

Make sure to catch DUDE SKYWALKER’S LIVE DEBUT this Saturday May 4th at SCARAMOUCHE alongside MIDNIGHT MAGIC. Miami natives Sam Plessett, Alex Borges and Fabio Galarce are the brainchildren behind Dude Skywalker, a musical project that delves into the darker sides of disco, soul, funk, and house, while adding their own personal touch of tropically influenced, dance-floor oriented aesthetics.

Sam grew up on Bob Marley, Beatles records and hip hop, while Alex is highly influenced by early trance, and 90’s dance music. They started collaborating in the early part of the decade as they were both highly inspired by the electro and funky house movements of the mid and late 2000′s. Fabio has been playing latin drums since his high school days and draws inspiration from his passion for avant-garde jazz, disco, indie rock, and afro beats. Together the group shares a vibrant taste for music of all genres and eras.

The three began making music and jamming out together during their college days in Tallahassee, DJing their own house parties and hosting monthly moon-lit drum circles. This turned into a more organized form of music-making as Sam and Alex began cultivating careers as nightclub DJs and began exploring music production while Fabio experimented with live rhythmic elements such as bongos, congas, shakers, and tambourine.

With their musical commonality and friendship in mind, they began work on their first track in the summer of 2012. After just a half a day they spawned “To The Floor” which was later released on Colorado based label Aspect Audio, and ended up charting in the Juno deep house charts. Its Beatport release on February 19th garnered support from heavy hitters such as Amtrac, Mickey, Soul Clap, Poolside, Aeroplane and Laura of Miami.

Since the release, the dudes of Dude have seen an explosion of Soundcloud and social media activity, blog/music industry support, and request for live shows around Miami. Still, Sam, Fabio and Alex see this as just the beginning as they plan to elevate their sound even more in 2013 and reach beaches and speakeasies worldwide with their space-funk soundscape.

RZZLR:
Behind and beyond the sound of all music lies the passion of an artist. Making their musical dreams a reality they are the ones responsible for instilling the timeless melodies and rhythms in our life that echo an eternity. Determined to take the mantel and bring it to new heights, is none other than the fast rising talent of RZZLR. Soaring right out of the tropical paradise that is Miami, FL and hoisting that new sound flag that is always sure to bring a wave of excitement to any dance floor, it is instantly noticeable that RZZLR’s passion for music is uncanny. Having been raised to appreciate all genres of the music world, he is constantly inspired by all styles of sound and even the environment around him. In his never ending search for new sounds, new rhythms and all the while endlessly craving the desire to put out new material, RZZLR has more than proved his exceptional skills as a producer/re-mixer. The way he blends a mixture of classic R&B vocals with his smooth tropically influenced production style, it’s no wonder he’s been dubbed: the “feel good move you music maker.”

We’re all about supporting the music scene here in Miami so when a friend, fellow promoter, blogger, label, or venue has a notable show coming up we’re down to help spread the word. With that said don’t miss out on the Kitsuné Club Night on May 11th at The Garret featuring Fred Falke. This is the 4th Kitsuné Club Night here in Miami and they’ve all been a blast. Check out our flash interview with Fred after the jump and answer the trivia question for a chance to win a pair of tickets to the show.

INTERVIEW:

ND. How would you describe the re-emergence of disco within the dance music scene and why do you think people started liking disco again?

FF. This music always refers to the frivolity of the disco days with its loads of parties and happiness. This is exactly what people need today

ND. What’s the difference between nu disco, French touch, and disco-house?

FF. Classifying music into very specific genre can be very tricky. The essence of music is to evolve constantly. Disco music has been revisited throughout the years , morphing into something different every time , but it’s always keeping its magical vibe.

ND. What style of music did you first start producing in your early days? Did you receive formal training in school? What elements of your original productions have stayed constant throughout the years and what sorts of influences have changed your sound?

FF. I’ve never consciously taken the decision to become Producer or musician or DJ. Now I’m all three and it’s impossible to imagine doing anything else. Everything progressed very naturally though.

The sound is really important to me and I attach a lot of importance to production. If you want people to love your music for a long time , it’s important to mix it well .

ND. What sort of venue do you prefer to play at? A festival, club, bar, warehouse, or a more intimate setting?

FF. Each venue brings its very own moment, a festival audience can give you a blast and the energy you get from packed crowd in a small venue is like a supernova!

ND. Name a release or artist you can’t stop listening to?

FF. When I m hooked on a song or an artist i m very addicted , now it s all about Fleetwood Mac’s RUMOURS reissue

ND. What are the first three words that immediately come to mind when you think about the music scene in Miami?

FF. rooftop pool parties

ND. What’s next for disco?

FF. I need a mirror ball to answer that

ND. What’s next for Fred Falke?

FF. I’ll be taking all the energy I m getting from the crowd on this tour to my studio, and turn it into music . To me, the repetition is very tiring.
