Death To The Sun- Molly Nilsson

Logistically speaking, Miami has always been an expendable stop for independent touring artists. Its geographic location renders it an official pain in the ass to drive to, with no real guarantee of a successful or profitable show. This being the case with many acts, South Florida has over the years been deprived of a healthy flow of out-of-towners, in comparison to those cities whom are not nestled on the STD-riddled penis tip of the grand ol’ US of A.

Enter Swedish-born, Berlin-based lo-fi pop songstress Molly Nilsson, who is making her first Miami appearance on Wednesday September 19 at Churchill’s Pub. Her gently-crafted brand of nostalgic synth pop sways and teeters upon stilts of bittersweet keyboard melodies and tape-compressed drum machine loops. Her voice is strong and her stories fragile, recalling tales of love and lonesomeness through clever bits of poetry and scenes that leave a lingering residual familiarity. Her music is simultaneously heart-wrenching and uplifting, her performances captivating as she simply sings her songs into the microphone, standing alone, looking everyone in the eyes in spite of the bright lights.

She could be lumped in a similar music category as Geneva Jacuzzi, or John Maus, who on his last release We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves, sang over Nilsson’s 2008 recording of “Hey Moon” off her album These Things Take Time as one of his tracks. She has released three other albums and one compilation since her aforementioned debut under her label moniker Dark Skies Association, making her as DIY as DIY can be. Supporting acts will include local locos Dino Felipe, This Heart Electric, Luma Junger, Whorish Boorish, and Dead Beat Dad. There is no cover at the door. Show starts at 9:00 P.M.
