This Heart Electric

Another rising talent from Miami underground is psych/lo-fi extraordinaire Ricardo Guererro aka This Heart Electric.  Many locals may know him as 1/2 of the dance-rock duo Animals of the Arctic or 1/3 of ha ha help!, but his new solo project goes in a new and addictingly enjoyable direction.  Always a sucker for that gritty psych sound, Guererro has fashioned what he calls “broken pop” that, despite the intentional low production quality (recorded on cassette 8-track), will have you whistling to yourself for the foreseeable future … MORE

Blackbird Blackbird Contest

Back in July of 2010 we featured an interview with an emerging project by San Francisco’s Mikey Maramag called Blackbird Blackbird.  This was in the heat of the so-called chillwave hype and during that balmy Miami summer, we were more than happy to let a little “chill” into our hearts.  Now with summer of 2012 quickly approaching, we finally have the opportunity to bring Blackbird Blackbird to the tropics.  Chillwave is alive and well. Haters take heed … MORE

F3

As a personal rule of thumb, anything that John Talabot chooses to grace with his craft is worth my attention.  F3 is apparently a trio of brothers from Tel Aviv Israel and they’ve produced quite an amazing track called Lonely Land.  It’s a cosmic disco-house trip with a balearic haze that places it somewhere between the dance floor and a beach blanket.  Talabot’s “Midnight Club Revision” gives it a darker and deeper rub with a steady momentum that will drive you into a hypnotic frenzy.  The release off Modular, is the second in a series of releases called “Club Mod.”  Purchase Lonely Land HERE with additional remixes by Coyote and Seahawks.

Four Tet Ticket Give-Away

Tonight Kieran Hebden (aka Four Tet) will be making his way to the Bardot carpet for a live performance.  Anyone who knows electronica, knows Four Tet.  Going back to 1998, Hebden has a track record that only legends can boast.  With influences ranging from hip-hop to folk, jazz to IDM, he’s remixed Aphex Twin, toured with Radiohead, collaborated with Burial and Thom Yorke and released seven full length albums and three remix albums.

In a last-minute celebration of tonight’s show, we’re giving away a pair of tickets to the 20th person who correctly answers this very easy trivia question:

What was the name of Kieran Hebden’s first band?

Please email all responses to info@nightdrivemiami.com with your full name.  The winner will added to the door list +1.

Music For A World Unknown

So they say that Dissident Records died back in 2009.  This UK label, headed by notorious EDM aficionado Andy Blake achieved cult status for its consistent top-notch quality and refreshingly purist approach to recording and distributing music.  With little to no internet presence or marketing outreach, the label simply let the music speak for itself.  It was built with a lofty and genuine ideal, and low and behold, they came.  Featuring artists such as Den Haan, Hard Ton, Cage & Aviary, Clap Rules, Neville Watson and many others, Dissident was on a roll.  But like I said, the label closed shop back in 2009 and Blake has moved on to his new projects, Cave Paintings and In Plain Sight.  However, releasing a compilation for ol’ time’s sake never hurts, thus we have Veros Artis Volume 4: Music For A World Unknown.  As expected, the 10-track release gives us a good taste of that left-of-center disco, techno and house that made the label famous including a few previously unreleased tracks.  You can buy the compilation HERE

MANIK remixes Lazaro Casanova

Christopher Manik (also known as simply MANIK) is another rising star in the world of house music.  With amazing tracks already released off staple labels like Ovum, Hot Creations and Nurvous, this kid keeps kickin out the jams.  I first fell in love with Body High (Posted HERE) and now he busts out with disco/house remix of Delorean’s Groove by Miami’s own Lazaro Casanova.    Here are a couple of tracks for you:

Todd Terje X Roxy Music

Just in time for our announcement that Todd Terje will be gracing Miami with his presence, he releases this little gem of an edit.  With a punk-disco flair, this dub of Roxy Music‘s Love Is The Drug gives the original a little more dance floor pep while maintaining its addictive pop appeal.  Off Virgin UK, the track is paired with a collaboration between Scandinavian disco heavyweights Lindstrom and Prins Thomas.  They give Roxy’s Avalon a more balearic and steadily hypnotic groove.

Download the release from Beatport HERE and if you’re in the Miami area, catch Todd Terje at The Electric Pickle May 24th!

78 Edits

Another master of smooth edits here in the form of 78Edits.  I’ve enjoyed these cuts for a while now.  Perfect for warm-up sets and making babies.  The three track Been A Long Time EP you see above has just been re-released off Original Cuts featuring a whimsically soulful Unlimited Love, a deep and slow title track, and a smooth and jazzy The Love You Give Me.

John Talabot

I had been anticipating Fin, the debut album by John Talabot for weeks.  Out on Permanent Vacation, this is a beautiful composition through and through.  Fluidly weaving from deep beats (So Will be Now) to washed-out synth-scapes (Estiu) to melodic vocal sample-sprinkled house (When The Past Was Present), there’s a little bit of everything I love in this release.  Hear are some stream only sample, but as usual I highly recommend purchasing the entire album HERE

Chubbie Boots

When I first heard the new EP from Melbourne’s Chubbie Boots, I got the same gut reaction I had when hearing Royalty or Clap Rules latest material.  This EP, released on Audio Parallax, seamlessly fuses so many techniques and genres in a way that is both experimental and accessible.  With very obvious house, dub, electro-funk, and soul influences the EP is beautifully produced.  The four songs on The Cracks Are Starting To Show display a range of styles while maintaining a cohesive concept.

First we have Adlerwerke, a balmy tropical dub piece with lush texture and echo-y guitar work.  Next, the title track most closely resembles the work of Clap Rules with an electro-funk piece that sounds like a balearic Zapp & Roger.

We Don’t Want No Stinkin’ Wurli, my favorite of the release, comes third with a stunningly beautiful jazz-house track that seems to borrow some sonic tricks from LA beat makers.  When the jazz vocal samples hit me two minutes in, overlapping with a soloing keyboard,  I knew it was love.

The final track How Could I Forget brings back the twinkling guitars for rather minimal doo-wop chop-up.  With very little bass, this beat-driven lullaby fades to a repetitive crooning vocal sample.
