To those who are avid readers of the blog, Jimmy Edgar requires no introduction. For those who aren’t in the know, he’s a Detroit native who specialized in making a sexually explicit yet insatiable blend of electro, house and funk. Now based in Berlin, Jimmy Edgar recently released he latest LP Majenta on Hotflush. I’ve been taking it in for about 2 weeks and I can say it’s definitely in the running for the top albums of the year… then again I have a particular soft spot for funk and all its modern permutations.
The album is damned sexy to say the least. Its opening track, “Too Shy”, sets the stage for listeners with a Midnight Star-like swagger. The album shows Edgar’s openness to more modern sensibilities with tracks like “Indigo Mechanix (3D)”, a well balanced interpretation of “bass music” a la Sepalcure or Machinedrum. The hard hitting “In Deep” goes ahead and samples “Moments in Love” by Art of Noise (One of my favorite tracks with probably the weirdest videos of all time) and converts it into this psychedelic, Zapp and Roger infused G-Funk odyssey. In all seriousness every track on the album is solid gold and encrusted with emeralds so I won’t ramble on, give it a listen.
