A few days ago we went to Volga Beach in Mexico for some chill wave, now over to Venice Beach (Paris) for some italo disco!

Venice Beach is a new Parisian duo formed by Magik Moar & Deedeehey. Magik Moar comes from a funk/hip-hop DJ background and Deedeehey is originally a visual artist known as Dider Clain. The two friends  (drawn together by a mutual love for  italo disco and other rare 80′s boogie & electro) decided to join forces to create disco remixes and produce timeless tracks for clubbers of the world…(and of Miami ;)

Their first single “Midnite” has been digitally released on their own label (the name is a secret for the moment) and the 1st album is coming by the end of 2011.

And now more fun facts but in French:

Venice Beach passent leur temps à “digger” des perles et à mixer, quand ils ne sont pas aux platines, ils skatent, ils surfent et ride des fixies… Leur premier single “Midnite” sous le label St. Sebastien est dispo et c’est déjà un tube club. L’album “This is Home” sortira avant la fin de l’année.

Fresh Meat Records

“Fresh Meat Records is an artist-run label and collaboration between Mazi Namvar (Audio Soul Project) and Nathan Drew Larsen, two music-heads who became friends during the second wave of house that ripped through Chicago in the early 1990s. That footprint having left its indelible mark, Fresh Meat Records has become the home to producers influenced by the “other side” of Chicago house – not the late 90s disco cut-ups – but the sometimes soulful, sometimes tracky, but always emotional, experimental-leaning synthesized dance cuts that are at the deep core of Chicago house music.”

If you do a little homework on label-head Mazi Namvar you’ll find he’s also half of Wasted Chicago Youth (with Justin Long).  The label also features Elef, Wiretappeur, Shenoda, Florian Kruse, Detroit native Kris Wadsworth, Nick Harris, and Mr. Brazil (who likes to spend time in Miami).

Irrelevant Celebrities

What a great name. Irrelevant Celebrities is actually Luke Foskey (Young Edits) and Richard Alexander from Australia. I guess you could kinda say they sound somewhat like a cross between Tiger & Woods (but more italo) and Cut Copy…(ish)….just for perspective. Young Edits/ Youth alone has put out a shitload of edits including remakes of Aaliyah, Stevie Nicks, and James Blake.  Foskey and Alexander’s tag-team interpretations are just as genius. I smiled when I first heard them and The Magician  (former half of Aeroplane)  featured one of them on one of his popular mixtapes, which means they’re getting some nice play ;)

Man, there’s so much cool shit happening in Latin America right now. I remember there used to be a 3 year pop culture delay when I grew up in Colombia during the 80s. Now places like Bogota and Mexico City seem to be having all sorts of amazing concerts and festivals, the visual art scene is flourishing, and there’s really cool bands surfacing from there.

I recently landed on Volga Beach and found myself very pleased by the chill-waves…lol. Anyway, looks like Santiago Padilla from Mexico City is behind it all and happens to be a very young dude. According to his Soundcloud page we should be expecting an EP pretty soon…and it’s gonna be “smooth”.  In the mean time here are a few tracks to hold you over. Viva Mexican Chilli-wave!

Patrick’s Edit-astic Voyage Mix

I decided to put together my collection of smoother disco originals and favorite re-edits for a casual half hour mix. It starts off with more soulful and mid-tempo beats and ending with some electro-funky jams.  Some of these have been featured here on the blog, but there definitely some new gems in here.  Feel free to download it for you iPod, might make that Dolphin Expressway a little bit more tolerable.

I’ve been listening to these guys for a minute now. Their remixes often make my WVUM show playlists and I get comments about their tracks from time to time. Searching for them on the internet can be somewhat of a challenge due to their 1 word biologically charged name, so I felt they would make for a good post on the blog.

Here’s their shpeal:

Bicep are a duo that hail from Belfast, brought together through a common obsession with all things analog. Their blog, Feel My Bicep, has grown to be the first port of call for those searching for cutting-edge and hard-to-find disco (nu and old) / chicago-house / detroit techno / italo / edits and the like. Growing with an amalgamation of jazz, rock and funk helped Bicep form an obscure approach and understanding of music. After each picking up a pair of Technics turntables in their early teens, Andy and Matt set about collecting records and experimenting to find their own style. Skip forward several years and countless DJ gigs and they realized they needed to make their own brand- succumbing to, as Bicep describe it, “80s inspired analog house“

Well we’re getting ready for the Tiger & Woods show here in Miami on October 1st at The Electric Pickle, so I’m particularly in a re-edit mood (when am I not?).  Ruben & Ra have even been referred to as “Britain’s answer to Tiger & Woods.”  These guys are best know for their Retrospective series of releases (retro001, retro002, retro003 feat. Rayko) which primarily sample or re-edit classic electrofunk/boogie tracks like I Can’t Wait by Nu Shooz or Mr. DJ by The Concept and add a contemporary and punchier flair.  Edits have been around for a while but artists are constantly reinventing this art.  We have for you a sneak peak at the brand spanking new Retro004 that’s set to be released October 24th.  Here’s how they describe the release:

Dedicating the A-side to the golden era of stateside electro, ‘Street Dance’ lifts samples from Break Machine’s East Coast anthem ‘Street Dance’, while ‘Moving On’ pays homage to the Californian soul of Ollie & Jerry’s iconic ‘There’s No Stoppin Us’ from ‘84.Over on the flip, the Sun is shining brightly with two poolside jams in the form of ‘Do You Need My Love?’ and the EP’s secret weapon ‘Island Living’.

I recently discovered A Taut Line & Hong Kong In The 60s and since then I’ve been digging their EP Unwoken. The 8 track release includes lovely remixes by veterans and newbies like The Dominatrix and Royalty. Being the insatiable music collector that I am I had to dig a little deeper and find more of their stuff… or anything related.

A few clicks later I discovered Green Linez, which is “a new collaboration between Chris and Matt Lyne (aka A Taut Line)” and one click after that I landed on their video for “Feel The Pressure”… Absolutely late 80s/ early 90s rad. Their recent Greeen Linez self titled EP is a bundle of daytime disco fun, buy it here or grab a free download below. Also make sure to watch both videos on the bottom of this post. Although based on the Pacific Coast the “Palm Coast Freeway” video might make some old school Miamians a little  nostalgic.

The Greeen Linez EP is the result of a new collaboration between Matt Lyne (aka A Taut Line) and Chris Greenberg (one third of the band Hong Kong in the 60s). Matt and Chris first met and started playing dance music together over 15 years ago, before they were even in their teens. Now, many years later and separated by two continents – Chris still lives in Cambridge, where they both grew up, whilst Matt has been living in Japan for over 6 years – the pair have decided to return to the musical sounds and styles that first excited and inspired them as youngsters. This EP is a trip back to the days when Cambridge still had multiple independent record shops (it now has none) and double-cassette dance compilations were the order of the day. However, as the clichés go, the past is a different country, and you can’t go home again, so this EP filters all those nostalgic influences through everything Matt and Chris have heard and experienced in the intervening years.

6. WALTER JONES – “Hot Contact”- Song title same as the record. Once again impressing me with his ability to put out epic tracks full of synths and amazing melodies. Jones is a New Orleans residing Deep House music producer.

8. VOLTAGE – “All Night” (Ilija Rudman remix)  produced by Joel Dickson, aka Nile Delta, formerly one half of Riot In Belgium, and Cut Copy front man and producer, Dan Whitford. Ilija Rudman’s version is a catchy, sexy, disco cosmic pop tune. Release date: May 2010.

10. COLE MEDINA - "Backstrokin” I loved mixing this track,the intro is perfect for beat-matching and then it turns into this heavy bass tune. Originally from California, Medina is known for his jazz influenced house pop productions. He is also the Owner and cofounder of House Arrest Record Label.

Soul Clap Hearts Miami

Soul Clap is spending their second quarter-life snow-bird retreat down here again this winter and that can only mean good things. They along with buddies Wolf & Lamb continuously consumed dance floors down here a few months ago and they’re coming back to do it again. Secret sources say they stayed in somewhere in Miami Shores last time hence the title of their new EP Shady Shores.

Do any Miamians recognize this disco ball?!

That’s right it’s The Electric Pickle’s! Which brings me to the next thing… our secret Pickle sources have revealed:

“Wolf +Lamb/Soul Clap start their residency at Electric Pickle on Saturday, Nov 5th.  It will be a monthly party that’s the first sat of every month except for Jan cuz Dec 31st they will be doing NYE with us.  They’re will be special surprise guests at each show.”

We’re excited. Check out the medley for the EP and the video of Soul Clap wrecking The Electric Pickle earlier this year.
