Here’s a little something something from the south of Italy. From the province of Reggio Emilia to be exact. The duo known, around this part of the world, as Crimea X are hoping to garner more recognition abroad with more and more posts like the one your reading now. But we let the music speak for itself right? I hear tinges of indi-electro with a bit of tropical funk/nu-disco. How does that sound… download their new track ‘Varvara’ off their Re:Prospective album on Hell Yeah Recordings which is actually a package of remixes by a round up of other dj/producers. Including a remix by long time Röyksopp collaborator Bjorn Torske. Their sound has been called, by some, “Social Kraut Disco” so I say give this a thorough listen and try and come up with your own genre, if you dare.

Secret Cities

Here’s a lo-fi indie band from the Midwest I’ve been slowly falling in love with. After a crazy week of Ultra Fest boom boom Secret Cities‘ new LP Strange Hearts has treated me like an Alka-Seltzer and a glass of water would. They’re with the Western Vinyl crew which includes other indie favs like Dirty Projectors, Here We Go Magic, and Botany.

Western Vinyl explains:

“Started by MJ Parker and Charlie Gokey at the tender age of 15, Secret Cities grew out of a shared love of psychedelic pop and a pen-pal arrangement that saw the pair trading 4-track tapes through the mail. The band eventually expanded to a trio with the addition of fellow Midwesterner and kindred spirit Alex Abnos on drums. After a few small releases on Baltimore’s Fall Records, the band released its proper full length debut (the well-received Pink Graffiti) in 2010 on Western Vinyl. Following a nationwide tour in support of that release, the band spent several intense months writing and recording new material, re-imagining their sound as a fractured take on classic AM radio pop. Strange Hearts, the resulting album, is due in early March on Western Vinyl.”

Rimer London

Being in the music game and running a music blog you can imagine we get hundreds of music submissions day in and day out. Since music is understandably hit or miss we post some or we leave some. Rimer London is one of the artists we needed to post sooner rather than later!

Influenced by everyone from Sly Stone to Giorgio Moroder to Kraftwerk, London has been playing tunes since the age of 16. A few years/bands later he hooked up with Bas Bron (aka Bastian, Seymour Bits, etc) and the two started playing music under the Comtron alias. Comtron’s debut Follow the Money was noticed by non other than Kraftwerk who in turn invited them for support on tour. Since then and having signed with Magnetron Music, London has worked on a few different projects most notably with fellow dutch artist/designer Parra and popular dutch rapper/singer Faberyayo under the name Le Le. The trio saw lots of success in Belgium and Holland. Now a solo artist and armed with his love for Italo, Techno, Dub and Pop  you could say he’s still hungry for more. Who knows it may just be another hit…

Panther God and his Discostep.

Our good friend and leader of the Circuitree pack, Panther God just sent us over his latest single. He calls it “discostep”, a genre that might just see it’s time in the light. Recorded to in essence, “make people move”, Panther God has been working hard the past year. He’s opened up shows for Lorn, Daedelus, Bonobo and the Glitch Mob, among others. With two well received EPs under his belt, on his own imprint Circuitree Records, he’s also slated to drop a couple more on labels Tokyo Dawn (Germany) and Made In Glitch (Japan). Don’t sleep on this dude… Be the first of your friends to say you heard him first.

You all probably know by now that we’re big supporters of French label Valerie Collective. Today we bring you their latest release: College‘s sophomore LP titled “Northern Council”. College is David Grellier who’s on the roster with Anoraak, The Outrunners, Minitel Rose, Stephen Falken, and others. I can’t decide how to react to this album yet. On one hand I’m happy it sounds like a typical College release but on the other hand it’s way too similar to but not as good as “Secret Diary”

So thanks to my pal and disco aficionado Luciano Medori for reminding to visit the Russian Adults blog out of Russia (naturally). Granted all the copy is in Russian but they have excellent taste and pretty pictures.
DannielRaddal, out of Mexico, is another chillwave artists that seems to embrace the chillwave brand (#donthate). Combining lush electronic soundscapes with innovative instrumentation, his new LP Pardo was released this month and made available for free (or donation) via Bandcamp.

Jessica 6 Interview + Todd Terry Remix

Along with artists Arthur Baker, Eli Escobar, Woolfy, Still Going, Team Rojas and Entresol, New York City’s Jessica 6 will be in house tonight for what’s sure to be an amazing live performance on the intimate carpet of midtown’s Bardot lounge. In town for Nightdrive’s One Year Anniversary, the other half of Hercules and Love Affair will be helping us celebrate in style. With Nomi Ruiz’s sensually deep vocal stylings and a sound that derives from classic house, electro, punk to soul, the threesome are more than ready to throw down their mix of dance. With such an intimate environment awaiting everyone attending the festivities I can only imagine this to be a night to remember. BRING US CAKE!

May 24th will be the day Jessica 6 release their forth-coming album ‘See The Light’ on Peace Frog Records. In anticipation of the new album they just dropped a nice little remix of the single ‘White Horse’ by House legend Todd Terry, Check it!

JESSICA 6 will also be doing a live DJ set on WVUM 90.5 FM (stream online at wvum.org) on Electric Kingdom from 7-8pm.

Woolfy Interviewed + ND One-Year Ticket Give-Away

Although I’m excited about all the artists we have performing tomorrow for Miami Music Week, my personal favorite is Woolfy.  He makes the “dirty disco” that really gets me going.  Not too many vocals, not too many strings or layers, just sophisticated grooves and driving beats.  Here’s a brief interview with Simon James, the London born/LA based musician behind the name.

ND: If it wasn’t for this, Woolfy would not exist…
Woolfy: Well I can put this up to alot things .. 1) my mental state .. sometimes the beast  comes out, and I know most people go there, I just put a name to it . I love the chase, once you’ve caught one , it’s usually not what you expected. 2) the underground .. it’s a place where people can let loose and take on characters that are a true part of themselves and we all love ‘em for it . For fucks sake , I’m sounding like a psychologist … alright, 3) Dj Harvey, the one man who knows how it’s done …
ND: You’d be most flattered if who told you they were your biggest fan?
Woolfy: Hmmm, not sure, but she’s about 25 years old, funny as hell, likes a good bender and can play the cello ..
ND: Dirty disco is….
Woolfy: Blood sweat and tears: bloody marys, sweaty bodies (I wanted to say sweaty ….  but I’ll keep it PG) and good ol’ tears (joy of course).

ND: Your favorite collaboration was with…
Woolfy: Dan Hastie of Orgone/Projections. We set up these weekends where we lock ourselves in the woods for three days and get so fuckin lost that we actually create something worthwhile. It sits on our hard-drives for years.  We’ve got about 50 tracks we haven’t finished . They’re slammin …
ND: What is the first thing you think about when you wake up?
Woolfy: What time is it, shit … where’s my shoes? Where’s my records? How do I get home ? …

A “broads” definition of disco would be .. this shit is hot , party party .. actually that’d be all our definition of disco .. but a broad definition of disco .. um, I would have to say Ilya Santana is definitley ruling some shit right now, pitched up or pitched down …
ND: What’s next for Woolfy and/or Projections?
Woolfy: Woolfy vs. Projections has a new LP coming out on Permanent Vacation. It’s definitley Cali with a touch of Wings .. the new single In Your Own Worlds will be out shortly .. as for my solo thang, I’ve got a long awaited release this summer called Juniors Throwin Craze, and a few remixes on the way . Oh yeah, a vampire musical as well …

Timber Timbre

Undoubtably a great fourth studio album by Canada’s Timber Timbre, ‘Creep On Creepin On’ brings with it all the things you loved about Mr. Cash and then some – well kind of not really… think a stripped down version of Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds. Man, makes me wish I was at a bar right now enjoying some hootch. The band is set to be on the move across America playing a slew of shows in support of the new record set to drop April 5 on Arts & Crafts.  The video/film for the single Woman was commissioned by the band and includes fellow musician/actor Slim Twig. Cheers.

Metronomy

Today was beautiful, the weather was gorgeous, we got brand new Freegums WVUM T-Shirts, I had a private production tour of the Ultra Music Festival grounds, and I also got a copy of the new METRONOMY album! I’ve been waiting for The English Riviera to drop since I head about it months ago and I’ve been smiling since I got my copy at 4am.  It’ll be commercially available in April in the US.  You gotta understand this is one of my absolute favorite bands ever. I’ve played Pip Paine (Pay the £5000 You Owe), Nights Out, and every remix I can get my hands on on repeat for the last few years so I’m thrilled Metronomy has given me reason to update my ipod.

For those of you have been deprived of Metronomy:

The band was started by Joseph Mount 11 years ago in Devon after his dad sold him an outdated computer to make music with. Dude starts making electro pop and comes out with an album. DJs start digging it and playing it at clubs. Erol Alkan gets ahold of Mount and invites him for a gig at his venue. Mount obviously needs a live band at this point so he adds some peeps. He originally brings in Gabriel Stebbing and Oscar Cash but Stebbing leaves Metronomy later on. Today the band is made up of Joseph Mount (composer, singer, keyboards and guitar), Anna Prior (drums), Oscar Cash (saxophone, backing vocals and keyboards) and Gbenga Adelekan (bass guitar and vocals) and they fucking rock!
