Erland and the Carnival

No matter what your musical preference you can’t deny talent when you hear it. Erland and the Carnival possess that said talent. The lads from London are no strangers to the world they call music. Having been in some pretty awesome bands before they fell into this project; let’s see there’s Simon Tong (formerly of The Verve, Blur and The Good, the Bad & the Queen), Orcadian folk guitarist and singer Gawain “Erland” Cooper and Drummer/Engineer David Nock (The Orb, The Cult, Paul McCartneys’ The Fireman). I’d say their pretty well rounded. They blend American folk with their English/Scottish roots which comes out very nice indeed. Their “Trouble in Mind” EP (US only) was released last week on Full Time Hobby / Yep Roc.

Here are some interesting live performances of Erland and the Carnival – Worth a look!

First monthly MINIMAL party starts tonight at Awarehouse.

A group of local creatives, entertainment professionals, musicians, business owners, artists and audio-enthusiasts have teamed together in their appreciation of minimal music, setting the infrastructure for a series of “minimal” inspired events. Taking place at the Awarehouse,  Minimal will feature precision sound, fine art, intelligent lighting, cymatic and electro-acoustic science displays, projection-mapped visuals, and interactive media all curated with the concept of minimalism in its various forms of art and design.

OFF!

Not the kind of thing we usually write about around here but I love this too much. A throwback project of sorts, OFF! consists of hardcore/punk rock pioneers Keith Morris (Black Flag/Circle Jerks) who teamed up with Steven McDonald (Redd Kross), Dimitri Coats (Burning Brides), and Mario Rubalcaba (Rocket From The Crypt). Really? Yes!

I caught their set, at the Fader Fort Showcase, in NYC for CMJ this past week among other acts like Glasser, The Babies, A Trak, Tanlines, Freddie Gibbs, Nick Catchdubs, etc… I kind of felt like none of these other acts really came to play. Hardly any crowd acknowledgment and just plain “blah” (with exception to Glasser who played a tight set). Well leave it up to OFF! to come out and “start the show”.  Their one minute bursts of fury brought me back to simpler days. So yeah that was the highlight for me, oh and FYI we Miami folk go harder then any of the New Yorkers in attendance… Linda I hope your lip is OK!

OFF!’s debut on Vice Records was released back on October 17th as a 7″. You might recognize the album art, they got Raymond Pettibon to do their designs (he did all the Black Flag covers). Great Stuff.

Youthless

These guys love to f*ck around, with instruments that is. Sure it’s been “done” but I love hearing bands like this. Two guys, one drum kit, one keyboard, one bass guitar and 12 effect pedals. That pretty much sums it up, lot’s and lot’s of SOUND!  Youthless, Alex Klimovitsky and Sebastiano “The Riff Machine” Ferranti, are a Portugal-based (and NYC/London-born) two-piece who have opened for Crystal Castles and The Horror’s. Not sure if it’s their style, delivery or what but this stuff reminds me of something I’d hear coming out of South America and it makes me feel good (maybe it’s the Portuguese in them). Some will know what I mean. Youthless are on One Bird Records.

IS TROPICAL

Londan based IS TROPICAL just made “South Pacific”, their new single, available for download. The new single is only IS TROPICAL’S second release and is a taste of what to expect from the band’s debut album, which is due out on KITSUNÉ/Cooperative Music early next year.

You can also see IS TROPICAL performing South Pacific and 2 other tracks live for the Black Box Sessions at the Roundhouse in London. The session was webcasted live earlier this month and it was the first webcast filmed using thermal imaging cameras.

Well worth a look:  IS TROPICAL LIVE at The Roadhouse (London)

SSUR

So here’s a new label out of Stockholm that I thought I’d share. SSUR or Sweet Surprise claim to be releasing music in the immediate future that they “think is good, without inhibitions or restrictions”. There first release will be with fellow Swede’s John Cederberg and Victor Holmberg, known collectively as Montauk. Previously they released their single ”Holiday” on the Brilliantine label which got a lot of attention this summer and was featured on Aeroplane’s “Chart Mix” May 2010. Sweet Surprise is set to release anything from Re-Edits, Nu Disco to Balearic House. What “Sweden” has shown us in recent years is that they have a good ear and taste in pretty much anything they touch, so I suspect lots of good things to come from this label, they seem to always kill it.

Here’s a Mixtape the SSUR crew sent over (It’s Awesome!!!) – Enjoy

AND DON’T FORGET THE AFTER PARTY AT BAR!!

All Hail Lord Huron

God I love this stuff.  Somewhere between Animal Collective and a piña colada lies Lord Huron.  The LA based project is the brainchild of Benji Schneider.  Yes, it’s another “beachy” sounding band that sounds like a luau on acid… or in an underground cavern… or both, but I’m a sucker for tropical psychedelics. He made waves with his first EP, Into The Sun, released back in June. His new track Mighty is an upbeat jam in the vein of El Guicho‘s Antillas that makes you want to dance hysterically around a campfire in a grass skirt.  It’s set to be released on his new EP by the same name on November 2nd.

We’re all very excited for tomorrow’s show at Grand Central here in Miami.  It seems to me like Caribou is one of those artists that took everyone by surprise.  His track aren’t the most poppy or formulaic.  They’re actually very sophisticated, minimal, and dark, yet there’s a melodic appeal that has garnered a significant fandom.  Join us tomorrow for an amazing live show with New York outfit Arp, opening the evening. Nightdrive has a last minute give-away for anyone who can shoot back the answer to the following Caribou trivia question:

What was the name of Caribou’s Debut EP?
