Tobacco: Video Premier

For the last few months the wierdo behind Black Moth Super Rainbow has been working on and promoting his grotesque solo project known to the public as Tobacco. His recent full length release Maniac Meat has been out for a hot min on Anticon (one of my faaaavorite labels); which, I might add, gets the help from non other than the man himself – Beck. You can hear Beck’s contributions on the tracks Fresh Hex and Grape Aerosmith. Reason for the update…. Tobacco has just premiered the video for Grape Aerosmith. Check out the new video directed, shot, and edited by Allen Cordell who also directed Beach House’s – ‘Walk in the Park’ video. Who says you can’t do everything yourself?

New Jens Lekman Track

Our buddies at Service in Sweden (srvc.se) just dropped a nice new Jens Lekman track today and NIGHTDRIVE is happy to post it for you guys. Lekman has been with Service  from the very start with his Maple Leaves Ep in 2003. He’s also released stuff on Secretly Canadian but I like to think of him as a member of the Service clan. There’s no point in writing a bio about Lekman since he’s been around for so long, but if you’re curious you can get more info by clicking here.

Ray Mang

Ray Mang is the disco dance party DJ alter ego of writer/producer Raj Gupta. The moniker was introduced as a vehicle for creating, releasing and spinning anything goes disco-centric party music for collectors, dancers, enthusiasts and Jocks alike. Taking inspiration from the extended disco mixes, dub versions and edits of such luminaries as Larry Levan, Walter Gibbons, Daniele Baldelli, Tee Scott, Began Cekic and Tom Moulton, and the open minded music policies of some of the pioneering early clubs such as the Paradise Garage, the Loft and the Italian Cosmic parties, Ray Mang set out to help keep the glitter ball shimmering and the disco flame burning into the new millennium!”

He’s got mad respect in the UK for his House music productions, remixes, engineering skills, and DJ sets. The guy’s been around for years and worked with groups like The Idjut Boys/U-Star, Simon Faze Action, and The Glimmers. He’s been coming out with some really nice original tracks and also some fantastic remixes (released exclusively on vinyl).

Former Ghosts

Former Ghosts is a collaborative project brought forth by Freddy Rupert. His friends Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu and Nika Roza Danilova of Zola Jesus both complete the synth-pop trio that is Former Ghosts. Rupert handles the vocal’s throughout the new record entitled New Love; filled with dark but poppier synth tinged sounds, when compared to his 2009 debut Fleur. Stewart is kind of the guy in the background enhancing the layers and textures while adding percussion. Danilova sings her way into the mix with a dark yet up-beat style. Also lending her chops to New Love is Yasmin Kittles (drool) of the duo TeArist… Anyways, a strong effort by this synth-latent power house. New Love is set for release October 4th on Upset the Rhythm.

Sharon Van Etten: “Take Away Show”

Since her critically acclaimed Pitchfork Festival opening performance – Sharon Van Etten‘s career is gaining nothing but momentum. This Jersey born / Brooklyn raised transplant kills her audience in the softest of ways.  She sings about it all with the minimalist of effort. Vincent Moon recently took notice of Sharon and added her to his “Take Away Show” marking it as his 109th installment in a series of musically based shorts. If your not familiar with Moon’s work, take the time to check it out, not a lot of people are do what he’s doing.

For fans of Cat Power, Feist, Joanna Newsom, etc…

Tim Fuchs

Here’s another Nu Disco loving Aussie with impressive re-editing skills. Tim Fuchs has shared the decks with Headman, In Flagranti, The Twelves, Rub & Tug, Van She, Bag Raiders, Jacques Renault, and many more. Blogs like Too Many Sebastians and Stoney Roads have picked up on Fuchs thanks to his renditions of LCD Soundsystem’s “Sound of Silver” and Foal’s “Miami” (ft Flight Facilities).

The Suzan

If you missed them at this years SXSW (all the rage) no worries… The all girl group The Suzan are getting ready to release their full length album on Fools Gold this coming September! I never made it out to SXSW but I do love all things Japanese so I was happy to find this foursom. At first glance you may be thinking 567&8′s but if you do then your a bit off. Definitely made to please, these chicks play fun bubbly garagy pop. OK wait, so yeah they are kinda like the 567&8′s but you gotta throw in some Delta 5 and or maybe sprinkle in The Slits? Point is they’re good. Isn’t that all you need? All I hope for is that the folks at Fools Gold don’t try and make them something they are not. But something about their top 28 friends on their myspace page could perhaps tell another story. Hopefully I’m wrong.

More Than One James: The Jameses

My faith and excitement in the South Florida indie music scene is regularly renewed as I dig deeper and find solid talent in the tri-county area.  I must give WVUM‘s locals only show, Miami Time, full credit for exposing The Jameses to my eardrums.  Once I heard their psych-surf anthem Rat People with eerily awesome allusions to Help Me, Rhonda, I was immediately sold.  This is the kind of song you play at the peak of a house party when people are obliterated in a good way (and before they’re obliterated in a bad way.)  The Jameses are a trio out of West Palm Beach by the names of Jesse, Danny, and Dan.  Apparently two of them share ‘James’ as a middle name but it’s top secret which two. Although based on that criterea, they could have also been named “The Dans” but it wouldn’t sound nearly as wonderfully awkward.

Entresol Update

Last week we had the pleasure of seeing Entresol’s first show ever. The place was packed and as soon as Eddie went on stage a mass of kids started dancing, I was dancing. The cool thing is that he’s not just some guy behind a laptop. He has a whole mess of analog drum machines, samplers, and synthesizers which he time codes together and plays live while singing…no Ableton or playing off a CD BS here. We had several very happy looking locals asking “Who is this guy?” and others wondering where the hell he came from. I’m glad we have a great new local electronic artist in Miami.

Entresol will be releasing his EP later this summer, we’ll keep you posted. In the meantime check out some more of his stuff:

Apollo Sunshine

I first heard Apollo Sunsine after watching the movie Whip It. I think I had their song Breeze on repeat for about a week. Sam, Jesse, and Jeremy are from Boston, San Fran, and Brooklyn (although I’m not sure who is from where).

The New York Times describes their sound as “bouncy 60′s-style melodies crack wide open, breaking into outbursts of pummeling and feedback before jumping back into the tune. It’s all neatly and cleverly plotted, but with a looming chaos that’s anything but nostalgic.”

Check it out: (it’s glorious)
