R.I.P. Ramm:ell:zee

Rammellzee’s graffiti and art work are based on his theory of Gothic Futurism , which describes the battle between letters and their symbolic warfare against any standardizations enforced by the rules of the alphabet. He was also instrumental as one of the original hip hop artists from the New York area who introduced specific vocal styles which date back to the early 1980s.

“Beat Bop” was originally released in 1983 by record label Tartown. Initially distributed merely as a test pressing, it was mostly recognized for being the main theme for graffiti documentary “Style Wars” and having a cover designed by famed Jean Michelle Basquiat.

Rammelzee, a legend in the truest sense passsed away yesterday in his Far Rockaway, Queens.  Cause of death has yet to be released.

Another genius of our time fallen, but will never be forgotten.

Total Slacker

There’s a crazy energy with Brooklyn’s  Total Slacker (Impose) that’s a bit surprising. Not exactly what you’d expect from the first strum of guitar your ears pick out when pressing play. It’s still shoegazy and psychy-surf but with an edge that’s totally RAD dude! Meant in the most sincere way. Another thing about this band that’s totally freakin awesome is their record art (one of those records you’d buy in thrift store just because the cover was AMAZING and expected the best when you got home). Not sure if it’s done by the band or someone close to them but it’s real cool. I’m a total sucker for good, interesting, early 90s California-tinged amazingness. But yeah, let’s just say that the piece of vinyl I bought hasn’t stopped spinning!

Turns out my friends twin brother Jer Robert Paulin did the video for the single ‘Magical Date Night’ filmed at the Mercury Lounge, props to Jer.

Ichisan & Nakova: Yugo Disco

Ichisan & Nakova‘s music proves there can never be too many types of disco. Feel free to credit these guys for coining the term “Yugo Disco” which seems to be spreading like wild fire in Slovenia, one of the republics of former Yugoslavia. Besides being good friends, DJs, and vinyl collectors Igor and Jure like to compile and record everyday sounds to use in their music. How crafty.

I asked them what’s up and Igor replied:

—-

Our next show is at the Garden festival in Croatia next Saturday:

Upcoming releases >

- Discodromo (Ichisan&Nakova Remix) – Internasjonal Records
- Walter Jones (Ichisan Remix) – Under The Shade
- Ichisan – House Dance Conference EP – Under The Shade
- Few more remixes by Ichisan coming out soon…
- New Ichisan album hopefully sometime next year…

this is it,
Igor

Nice and simple. Just how we like it here at Nightdrive

Glasba:

Ava Luna

Yes, I think I found what I was looking for… These kids hail from Coney Island/Brooklyn NY and call themselves Ava Luna (Cooling Pie/Enviromental Asthetics). Now from what I know they all really really like Gospel music which, to me sounds more Doo-woppish in their songs. Somewhere between soul, punk and harmonious synth-electro music, but yes it’s still hard to categorize. Wait do I hear a little Lidell? Shhh its OK, I think I like them even more now? Anyways its fun stuff. The girls sing the harmonies and dance the steps, the boys bang away (Carlos writes the songs). Love it.

Ava Luna – Clips

Ava Luna – Past the Barbary

The video for the single Clips was directed by: Hooks who also (I might add) directed the video for local boys Awesome New Republic! We love that too.

Muuuugwuuuuump!

I don’t even know how to begin to describe this sound other than simply calling it infectious. This track has had me doing back flips on my bed all week. Released on The Rapture’s Throne Of Blood records, Mugwump is a collaborative effort between Belgian duo Geoffroy Mugwump and Kolombo. “The Congregation of Discalced Clerks” sounds like Italo disco fused with Breaks and Acid-House making this a perfect blend of dance music all together.

The Day We Fell In Love With Appaloosa

Paris based Appaloossa (not to be confused with the 2008 Ed Harris/ Jeremy Irons movie)  has shared the stage with Thieves Like Us, Cat Power, Dam Funk,  Glass Candy, DJ Mehdi, Acid Washed and many others. She’s been hand selected to join the oh so charming Italians Do It Better and Kitsune teams, which definitely says something about her musical style.

The Day (We Fell In Love) was released on Kitsune Maison 6 a few years ago and I’m still not over it. It’s a pretty awesome track and although some of the remixes below get pretty heavy they’re still fun. If you’ve googled Appaloosa before and only found equine related stuff here’s the connection:

The Appaloosa is a horse breed known for its preferred leopard-spotted coat pattern and other distinctive physical characteristics.

…nice fun fact.

hahahelp!

Animals of the Arctic

Miami’s own noisemakers Animals of the Arctic & hahahelp! are ready to get sweaty.  Both set to take off early July for their 2010 HOODRATS Across America 2010 Tour.  A small tour up the East coast which will take them as far as Brooklyn, NY.  Join Nightdrive DJs Patrick Walsh + Moshe and the boys this Tuesday June 29th at Black Bar (28 NE 14 St.) for the Hoodrats Tour kick-off party as both bands break out in a frantic – rock ‘n’ roll / shake ‘n’ shimmy, “HOODRAT” style.  To set things off right they recently gave me a couple of new tracks for your downloading pleasure.  Listen, get pumped, get psyched, get ready!

Dreamhouse a.k.a. Pal Joey

Fresh house music from 1990! Here we have an amazing composition by Dreamhouse, just one of dozens of aliases of New York City producer Pal Joey.  From tweeking the knobs for KRS-1 and Boogie Down Productions to cutting up beats on reel-to-reel for Sade, Joseph Longo is known for remixing just about everything for everyone during the early 90′s. Upon further investigation I found that much like Larry Levan, Joey was pretty much responsible for the success of countless artists with his re-working of their titles. Don’t believe me? Check out his website and take a peek at his discography. With all that said, “I Can Feel It” is easily one of the most inspiring New York House tracks I have ever heard.

Antena: Toujours Du Soleil

Antena‘s Camino Del Sol came out a while ago but I feel like it went unnoticed. The Todd Terje remix is fantastic. Actually, anything Terje touches is fantastic. Here’s the scoop on the Belgian band’s EP:

(Translation in the comments section)

Save this one for a nice Florida sunset.
