Tomas Barfod

May 26, 2012

My love for Tomas Barfod started a few years ago when I came across his remix of Bon Iver’s Re: Stacks and realized he was the founder of WhoMadeWho. Unfortunately I missed his DJ sets down here last WMC but given his new album Salton Sea is pretty awesome I’m sure he’ll be invited back in the near future. (I’ll be adding Salton Sea to our rotation albums list at wynwoodradio.com)

Bio:

Tomas has played drums since he was 10 years old, but at some point he started buying vintage synthesizers, samplers and sequencers. He slowly started djing and producing music. Since then he has been doing a variety of electronic produced music, both alone and together with different partners (fx. Kasper Bjorke) and on various important record labels.

After some years in the electronic club scene live music was slowly catching in on him again, and he started Whomadewho with two fellow danes, where he plays drums and produces. In general you could say his career has been rather diverse – basically he has been doing everything from ambient techno to Japanese pop.

For Tomas Barfod the kickstart came with the ‘Tomboy’ acid / disco 12” series on Gomma records, shortly afterwards came releases on Get Physical, Kitsune and Turbo, where ‘Samba’ and ‘I.K. Guitar’ became club bangers. Tomas also is a much requested remixer and has done remixes of such diverse artists as Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, Gorillaz, Lopazz, Telex, Chromeo, Asia Argento just to name a few. As a dj he has played legendary clubs like Fabric (London), Panorama Bar (Berlin), Bar 25 (Berlin), Goa (Roma), Magazini Genarali (Milan), Razzmatazz (Barcelona), Lux (Portugal), Social Club (Paris).

Nitemoves

May 25, 2012

Nitemoves is the monkier of Rory O’Conner, a talented musician and sound designer who is heavily involved with the boys over at Moodgadget and Ghostly Int’l. His debut LP Longlines was produced in the back of trains, planes and automobiles whilst touring as a drummer for Com Truise and Tycho over the last year. To be sure, based on whom he colludes with you know quality of the music is going to be high. With its hip-hop influenced beatsmithy, dark 80′s synth work and entrancing production methods  Longlines has all the tell-tale signs of a good summer album. This release is best enjoyed chilled at dusk or dawn with the windows down and bass blasting, just sayin’. And besides, the word “night” is in the name so you know we love it ;-) .

Todd Terje Tonight!

May 24, 2012

One of our most posted about artist is Todd Terje. We must like him right? Anyway, Terje (pronounced a bit like Perrier but with a rolling R) will be hitting up The Electric Pickle tonight for one of our Nightdrive shindigs. We’re super excited about this as dude rarely plays in the US and is only playing 3 North America dates this time around. If you’re wondering how disco got popular again, fingers point to this guy (amongst a few others).

BIO:

Following a string of celebrated releases leaning on everything from kitschy euro sounds to deep funk and latin jazz, the relatively new to the scene Todd Terje has already made his mark within dance music circuits. Gems such as the cheese monster “Eurodans” and the latin disco-fuelled edit of Jacko’s “Can’t Help it” under his Tangoterje edit-moniker instantly made industry types and clubbers alike go bananas, and whatever the 25 year old Norwegian puts his fingers on, it always comes out with that crucial blend of musicality and playfulness.

Growing up in the rural village of Mjøndalen, dance music influences were scarce, and no, there was never any Diskoklubb there. Not a lot of obscure disco or acid house in his milk either. However, during the early/mid nineties dance culture sneaked it way into even the most remote parts of Norway, thanks to the popularity of acts like The Prodigy and national radio stations filling prime time slots with underground jocks Olle Abstract and Pål “Strangefruit” Nyhus. On the more personal level, Terje’s sister was a close friend of the late Tore “Erot” Kroknes, and the tapes she brought home to the young Terje became a major source of inspiration. Playing around in his early teens on a crap PC together with his mate Dølle Jølle, Terje made his first attempts on house and jungle, which they played from cassette tapes on junior high school-dances. Maybe too young for old music back then, Terje reckoned that disco was all a bit silly – until Bjørn Torske’s “Sexy Disco” caught his ears in 1999. (read more)

PH Groove

May 23, 2012

Peter Hecher began his musical career as a house music dj and producer in the 90′s. Since then the Canadian native developed his alter ego, PH Groove, which reveals his space disco and italo influences. Hecher has releases under various Canadian labels and has also been reviewed in Mixmag, Muzik Mag and XLR8.

Ph groove goes back to his 80′s roots with a synth infused electronic sound and has recently released his latest EP Hyperdrive under Relux Rimini. Hecher currently runs and owns his own record label called Tonite Records and claims he ‘will always keep producing music’, we hope so.

Roberto Rodriguez

May 18, 2012

Roberto Rodriguez from Helsinki has been in the business of producing quality deep house for over a decade, both as himself and under his more recent “Manolo” moniker, but 2012 marks the release of his debut full-length album, Dawn. In contrast to his previous material, the new record flexes some strong disco influences throughout, as highlighted by its lead single Tell Me. All in all, a nicely assorted and very solid collection of tracks.

Dawn is available now on Beatport.

Bam Spacey

May 17, 2012

We love new releases from Ceremony home to Albert Swarm, Young Athletes League, and Dag för Dag. Their latest and greatest is Swedish DJ/ Producer Bam Spacey who’s last release Land reminds me  a little of  The Tough Alliance and Studio with traces of  “deep pop” (a term I just learned). It’s got that Swedish summer feel but is also relatively danceable. I just wish I spoke Swedish.

Bio:

After the demise of his former bands Magnus Johansson began creating music under the Bam Spacey guise in 2007. Mainly as a means to produce music solely on his own, Johansson ditched the idea of a multi-member indie outfit and followed his love for electronic music, soon creating a studio in his bedroom in Malmö, Sweden.

Bam Spacey productions are a means for Johansson to take an explorative focus on many music types including microhouse, ambient dub, and his beloved minimal techno. Even so, Johansson is very much a producer still finding his sound. Throughout the course of his signing to Ceremony and subsequent creation of the tracks that would end up as his debut material for the label (the Vi delar samma grav single followed by the Land EP) his sound morphed in and out of different norms.

What broke through was, at times, a vocal driven approach to minimal electronic music. With that a tripped out vision of a neon shrouded city and the feeling of cruising through it took shape. In a not too distant future where big name corporations dominate the skyline and block out the sun, best exemplified in Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner film, Bam Spacey takes on a different approach. One focused on optimism and movement, because people in this future need to dance too.

Santiago Caballero’s S&T Mix

May 16, 2012

There’s more to this mix than a well-curated assortment of dance tracks cleverly arranged with clean transitions.  There’s a clear concept and a spirit behind what Miami-based DJ Santiago Caballero puts out.  Months in the making, this mix coincides with the relatively new weekly party in the Miami scene lewdly titled Slap & Tickle.

Curiously held on notoriously challenging Tuesday nights, S&T is a dancer’s dance party.  Resident DJs and close Nightdrive comrades Pirate Stereo, Troy Kurtz, and Caballero himself bring some serious heat to El Bolero Room at The Electric Pickle with local guest DJs every week. The faithfully packed room along with a discreet and unassuming vibe make this party the panacea for any jaded Miami local.  These guys are on to something and they’re doing it for all the right reasons.
